LIFE SandBoil is a project coordinated by the Department of Civil, Chemical, Environmental and Materials Engineering (DICAM) of the University of Bologna (Italy) and funded by the European Commission within the LIFE programme. The project also involves the Interregional Agency for the Po River (AIPo), Officine Maccaferri Italia srl and the North-Transdanubian Water Directorate (ÉDUVIZIG). The project aim is to develop a sustainable, natural-based and cost-effective engineering solution for the mitigation of the backward erosion piping risk in river embankments.

WHY LIFE SANDBOIL?

A sand boil at the toe of a river embankment is the surface manifestation of the occurrence of backward erosion piping in the aquifer underlying the flood protection structure. The risk of river embankment failure, and thus flood, greatly increases in sites affected by sand boils, therefore the phenomenon must be prevented as much as possible. Sand boils are routinely detected along many river embankment systems during high water events. The sand boils catalogued in the middle-lower stretch of the Po river are more than 130. A large number of sand boils have been also observed in Hungary, along the Danube river and its tributaries.

WHAT WE DO

Our activity is mainly focused on prototyping a mitigation technology against backward erosion piping, through a multi-step process involving first validation in a medium-scale laboratory model and then at full scale, in a pilot site. The LIFE SandBoil final aim is to obtain a complete and qualified system, suitable for large-scale implementation in river systems affected by backward erosion piping.
