LIFE SandBoil team @ pilot site in Boretto to conduct field investigations

25 November 2023

Field investigations for the LIFE SandBoil team in the pilot site of Boretto. Site characterization has been carried out through boreholes and cone penetration tests. During borings, undisturbed soil samples have been collected for their characterization in the laboratory of the University of Bologna. A piezometer was also installed to control seasonal water table fluctuation of the freatic aquifer. Results will be used to design the real size embankment.

LIFE SandBoil @ 28th EWG-IE – Sheffield (UK)

18-21 JULY 2022

Official presentation of the LIFE SandBoil project to the international scientific community occurs during the 28th meeting of the European Working Group on Internal Erosion in Embankment Dams, Levees and Dikes, and their Foundations (EWG-IE) in Sheffield (UK) from 18th to 21st July 2022. The European Working Group was created in 1993 with the aim of disseminating knowledge (recent results, case studies), and giving guidance to the practitioners and managers in charge of assessing the safety of dams, dikes and levees. It welcomes experts and scientists from over 30 countries in Europe and all other countries (USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, …). The floor is also given to young dam engineers, young researchers, and PhD students. It is mainly a place for exchanges between practitioners and scientists, and between experts, young engineers and researchers. Aims of the periodical meeting of the EWG-IE is to share novel ideas and recent advances on topics related to internal erosion: in this framework, the database on backward erosion piping implemented by LIFE SandBoil has been launched within the Scientific community.

LIFE SandBoil @ METTIAMOCI IN RIGA – Online Conference promoted by the Italian Ministry of Ecology Transition

26 oCTOBER 2022

LIFE SandBoil is one of the initiatives that the Italian Ministry of Ecology Transition outlined as best practice to tackle adaptation towards climate change. The project is therefore introduced within the online Platform Meeting ''Water and soil: the path to sustainability - Good practices for a new environmental governance'' held on 26th October under the project “METTIAMOCI IN RIGA”. This initiative, funded by Italian National Operational Programme “Governance and Institutional Capacity 2014-2020”, intervention line "Knowledge Platform - Capitalization of experiences and dissemination of results for the replicability of good practices for the environment and climate" is oriented to train and support local and regional administration in adopting responsible behaviours to face the process of climate change adaptation, also thanks to replication of previous positive experiences. LIFE SandBoil brings its approaches, engineering solutions and technologies as a way to intervene to prevent emergencies as well as to manage and restore potential damages, pushing the increase of awareness of local managers on the flood risk from backward erosion piping.

LIFE SandBoil Annual meeting @ Officine Maccaferri

31 MARCH 2023

LIFE SandBoil consortium meets for its annual meeting at Officine Maccaferri premises on 31st March 2023. The occasion is fruitful for checking the project implementation, the achievement of targets as well as for planning the next period of activities. Important steps have to be faced for the preparation of pilot site and the full-scale prototyping.

LIFE SandBoil @ 29th EWG-IE – Lyon (FR)

3 JULY 2023

First results of the LIFE SandBoil small-scale prototype are successfully introduced to the European Working Group on Internal Erosion in Embankment Dams, Levees and Dikes, and their Foundations (EWG-IE) in occasion of their meeting on 2nd - 5th July 2023 in Lyon (FR). This European Working Group was created in 1993 with the aim of disseminating knowledge (recent results, case studies), and giving guidance to the practitioners and managers in charge of assessing the safety of dams, dikes and levees. With her intervention, specifically dedicated to the “Design of a small-scale experimental apparatus for investigating a mitigation strategy against backward erosion piping”, the LIFE SandBoil Coordinator, Laura Tonni shares the first scientific data and findings deriving from the small-scale prototype, operating in the UNIBO laboratories. The scientific and technical community attending the Working group welcomes with strong interest the results obtained so far by LIFE SandBoils project, able to support a deeper insight in backward erosion piping phenomenon and in its management across Europe.

LIFE SandBoil poster @ CNRIG’23– Palermo (IT)

5-7 JULY 2023

LIFE SandBoil shows its poster at the “VIII Convegno Nazionale dei Ricercatori di Ingegneria Geotecnica” (8th National Conference of Geotechnical Engineering Researchers), the Italian group of researchers that aims to promote the coordination of research and training activities in the Geotechnics topics, for a positive exchange with other scientific disciplinary sectors, as well as among scientific and cultural associations of the sector. The poster, describing the experiences conducted with the small-scale prototype, highlights the results attained by simulating a piping process in sand sample, respectively without and with a geocomposite barrier. Within the Conference, the LIFE SandBoil team has the occasion to network with the most significant initiatives that are currently active in the Italian scenario and to promote the exchange and the spreading of achieved findings, before the development of the full-scale prototype.

LIFE SandBoil presented at @ 44th Meeting of the Flood Protection Expert Group of the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube river

12 OCTOBER 2023

LIFE SandBoil is one of the project introduced in the second day of the Flood Protection Expert Group of the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube river. The ICPDR is a transnational body, which has been established to implement the Danube River Protection Convention and incudes Delegations of all countries of the basin. It works to ensure the sustainable and equitable use of waters in the Danube River Basin. The sustainable management of flood risks is one of the key areas of the Flood Protection Expert Group and in this framework, the 44th meeting provides rooms to exchange project findings and build upon conducted experiences to boost new project. The meeting is the occasion to updated the Expert Group on progresses of LIFE SandBoil and share knowledge across Danube river countries.

22 JANUARY 2024

LIFE SandBoil is one of the active participant in the “Thematic Dialogue for Mission Projects on Monitoring and Evaluation”, a specific exchange online session promoted by the EU Mission Adaptation Community. The event is aimed at discussing topics on “Monitoring and Evaluation” techniques and tools for Adaptation, meaning on the understanding whether put-in-place responses have contributed to a reduction in climate risks/vulnerability or increase the adaptive capacity and resilience. Contributions and results obtained will be shared with the Community of Practice of the Mission to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experiences, strengthening coordination and collaboration among its members, i.e. regional and local authorities Mission projects and regions or local authorities participating in their implementation, the European Commission and other relevant European institutions.
